When should Local SEO begin for a new business?
Local SEO should begin while you are still deciding the public identity, website facts and Google Business Profile eligibility, not on the afternoon the doors open.
A new storefront, clinic, dental practice, restaurant, salon, professional office, home-service company or additional branch all share the same first job: one accurate description of who you are, where you work, what you offer and how to contact you. That work is what Local SEO is, not a ranking campaign. If you wait until opening week, you are verifying a listing, printing menus and answering phones at the same time.
A new branch of an existing brand still needs its own eligible profile and its own unique location information. Do not clone a city-swapped page and call it a launch. See when to create location pages.
Pre-launch
Lock the public name, address or service area, phone and website facts Create the Business Profile when the business is eligible, including a future opening date if it is not open yet.Verification and website
Verify when ready, and publish useful pages customers actually need Homepage, core services, contact, location or service-area facts, About, and accurate contact details.Opening and baseline
Go public with true hours, then record a measurement baseline Users cannot leave reviews until the business is officially open. Do not seed fake reviews.Reviews and measurement
Ask real customers after service, and keep tracking visibility and leads This is an operational plan. It is not a promise that rankings arrive on day 90.Can I create a Google Business Profile before opening?
Yes. Google currently lets you create a Business Profile before opening, set a future opening date, and verify later so the listing does not falsely show as open.
Google’s opening-date help says you can create a profile to let the community know when the business will open at the given address. For bulk-verified accounts, Google emphasises setting the future opening date before verification because those accounts verify instantly. The ordinary create flow includes a verify-later option. Eligibility still applies: customers must be able to visit a real location, or you must qualify as a service-area business. Virtual offices used as storefronts are not eligible. If Maps already has an unclaimed listing for the same shop, claim that one. Do not create a second pin beside it. Ownership of an existing listing is covered in what to do if you lost access to a Google Business Profile.
How far ahead can the opening date be entered?
Google currently says you can enter an opening date up to one year in the future, and that only the month and year are required.
You can also add an opening date after the business is already open, which Google uses in some Search surfaces to show how long a business has operated. If that displayed tenure looks wrong, set the correct month and year. Source: Add a business opening date.
When can the profile become publicly visible?
After you enter the opening date and verify the business, Google currently shows the profile on Google 90 days before the opening date.
In that 90-day window you can use posts, photos of the real fit-out, and a merchant description. Users cannot suggest edits or post reviews and photos until the business is officially open. After opening, Google currently shows a “Recently opened” tag for 90 days. These are product behaviours, not ranking guarantees. Source: Add a business opening date.
Verification methods and failures are a separate problem. If video, postcard, email or phone verification fails, use why Google Business Profile verification failed rather than opening a duplicate profile.
What should the website have before opening?
Before opening, the website should identify the business, explain the core services, provide accurate contact details, and describe the location or service area customers will actually use.
That usually means:
- A homepage that states who you are and who you help
- Core service explanations a customer can act on
- A contact path that works: phone, form or both
- Location or service-area information that matches the Business Profile
- An About page when it helps people trust a new operator
- The same name, phone and address or service area everywhere on the site
Do not invent extra city pages, “near me” URLs or thin blogs merely to look larger in search. Useful pages are enough. A checklist for the wider public presence is the Local SEO checklist. Profile setup is Google Business Profile optimisation.
Should I create reviews before opening?
No. Do not create fake or pre-opening Google reviews, and Google currently prevents users from posting reviews until the business is officially open.
Asking family to leave five-star reviews from the car park on opening morning is still a policy problem if they did not receive the service. After you open, ask real customers through a process that stays inside Google’s rules: how to get more Google reviews ethically.
When should citations be created?
Create important citations after the public name, address or service area, phone and website are stable enough that you will not have to correct every directory a week later.
A new restaurant that changes its phone twice during shopfitting will spend the first month chasing old numbers. Start with the website and Business Profile, then the directories customers and data providers actually use in your market. You do not need hundreds of low-quality listings on day one. Inconsistent leftover facts are harder to clean than a short delay. See inconsistent business information online.
When should local rank tracking begin?
Start local rank tracking after the Business Profile is public and you have a documented baseline, not while the listing is still unverified or set to a future opening date that has not entered the public window.
A screenshot from a phone in the shop is not a baseline. Record queries, search locations and the date. New businesses often have little history, so early ranks will move. That movement is not a report card for work you have not done yet. Method: how to track Google Maps rankings.
What should be measured from day one?
From day one, measure whether the listing and website can be found, whether contact paths work, and whether enquiries are being recorded — not whether you already occupy every Map Pack in the city.
Practical day-one metrics: profile published and verified, hours and phone correct, website indexable, forms and calls reaching a human, Search Console property added, and a short list of branded and service queries to watch. Rankings become useful after there is a baseline. How long those later trends take is a separate question: how long Local SEO takes.
90-Day Local SEO Launch Timeline
Use the following as an operational planning framework. It is not a Google guarantee of rankings, leads or a finished campaign on day 90.
| Stage | Owner job | What not to treat it as |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch | Lock name, address or service area, phone, website and hours | A reason to publish doorway suburb pages |
| Verification | Create or claim the eligible profile; set a future opening date if needed | A ranking boost just for verifying |
| Website foundation | Publish the pages customers need, with matching facts | A keyword quota |
| Opening | Show true hours; stop using a future-opening state | The day Map Pack rankings are “due” |
| Baseline | Record queries, locations and contact tracking | Proof that competitors will now lose |
| Reviews | Ask real customers after a genuine service | A licence for incentives or gated reviews |
| Measurement | Watch visibility and qualified enquiries as trends | A 90-day money-back ranking claim |
