What does a Google Maps ranking actually mean?
A Google Maps ranking is the position a business occupies in Maps (or the local pack on Search) for a specific query, as seen from a specific searcher location, at the time of the check. It is not a permanent score, and it is not Google’s official “ranking metric” exported from a dashboard.
If you search “emergency plumber” on a phone in one suburb, the list you see is that check. A colleague searching the same words two kilometres away can see a different order. Personalisation, cached results and the exact Maps interface can add further variation. The useful interpretation is: “From this coordinate, for this query, this profile appeared here.”
Rankings belong in the visibility layer of Local SEO measurement. They do not count leads, and they do not replace Search Console, analytics or revenue data.
Why isn’t one ranking position enough?
One ranking position is not enough because local results are geographic. A first-place result at the shop door can sit beside a tenth-place result at the edge of the catchment. Reporting only the convenient check hides the area where customers actually live, work or travel.
Storefront businesses still serve a market larger than the pin. Service-area businesses often have no public pin at all, so a single office-based check is even less representative. Multi-location brands make the problem worse: one “company rank” averages away the branch that is invisible.
The practical response is to measure several points, keep the method stable, and report the pattern — not a single green screenshot.
Why can Google Maps results change by location?
Google Maps results can change by location because Google documents distance as one of the three main local-result factors, alongside relevance and prominence. Distance is how far each business is from the searching customer. If the customer does not share a location, Google uses what it knows about their location. Distance is not the only factor, so the closest business does not always rank first. A more relevant or more prominent profile can outrank a nearer one. The SEO industry often calls this geographic effect “proximity”. That word is useful shorthand; Google’s current help page says “distance”.

What is geo-grid rank tracking?
Geo-grid rank tracking is a method that runs the same local search query from multiple geographic coordinates arranged around a centre point, then records the ranking position at each point.
It is an industry measurement method, not a Google product. Google does not publish an official heat map of your Maps visibility. Tools estimate that pattern by sampling many locations. The value is geographic distribution: where the profile is in the pack, where it is merely present, and where it is missing.
How does a geo-grid work?
A geo-grid works by combining a centre, a set of scan points, a radius, a grid size, a query and a ranking position at each point.
- Centre: the coordinate the grid is built around. For a storefront this is often the business address. For a service-area business it should be a chosen point in the area customers search from, not a hidden home address by default.
- Scan points: the individual coordinates where the query is checked.
- Radius: how far the outer points sit from the centre.
- Grid size: how many points are used (for example 3×3 versus 7×7). Size and radius are different settings; see how to choose grid size and radius.
- Query: the search terms being measured. Use commercially meaningful services, not hundreds of near-duplicate variants.
- Ranking position: where the target profile appeared at that point, including “not found” if it did not appear in the checked results.

What should you track before starting?
Before starting, record the target business, its Google Business Profile, the keyword, the target area, the competitors you already know, the date, and the baseline scan configuration.
- Legal and trading name, plus the Maps listing you intend to measure.
- Primary Google Business Profile category, and whether the address is public or hidden.
- One core keyword per scan, mapped to a real service — see keyword mapping.
- The geography you actually serve, not an aspirational region.
- Known offline competitors, knowing they may differ from Maps competitors.
- Scan date, grid size, radius, centre and the tool or manual method used.
If you skip this, later “improvements” cannot be compared. That is the same discipline as any other trend measurement.
How do you establish a baseline?
You establish a baseline by running the first comparable scan before you change the profile, website or citations, then storing the configuration with the results.
Pick a quiet operational moment if you can: not during a suspension, a move, or a category experiment. Use the grid size and radius you intend to keep. Save the date. If you later change the radius, treat the new scan as a new series, not a continuation of the old one.
Illustrative example: a physiotherapy clinic in an inner suburb records a 5×5 grid, 3-mile radius, query “physio”, centre on the clinic address, on 1 March. That file is the baseline. April’s scan uses the same settings. If May uses a 10-mile radius, May is a different study.
How should you read a ranking heat map?
Read a ranking heat map as a set of sampled positions, not as Google’s official coverage map. Look at the numbers first: pack positions (typically 1–3 in the local pack), mid-list positions, weak positions, and cells where the business was not found.
Colour is a visual aid only. Local Falcon and other tools may use their own palettes. The diagram on this page uses teal for Map Pack ranks, gold for ranks 4–10, and slate for weaker results. That coding is an Otepsphere convention for this illustration. Do not assume every product uses the same colours.
Average rank can hide a split market. Nine points that average “8” may be three pack ranks and six absences. Measure visibility across the market with distribution, not only a mean.
What should you do when visibility is weak in part of the grid?
When visibility is weak in part of the grid, diagnose before you act. A red or empty cell is a finding, not a brief to publish a new suburb page.
Potential causes include:
- Distance from the searcher to the business or service base.
- Stronger competitors in that pocket of the map — see Maps competitor analysis.
- Weaker relevance: category, services or landing page not matching the query.
- A landing page that describes a different offer or a different place.
- Market geography: the cell may sit outside where customers actually hire you.
Do not treat every correlation as causation. A weak western cluster next to a competitor with a western premises is a hypothesis. Confirm with the competitor’s category, reviews, website and distance before changing yours. If the weak cells are suburbs you do not serve, the correct action may be to shrink the scan, not to expand the website.

Can you track Maps rankings manually?
You can track Maps rankings manually by searching from different places, but the method is slow, easy to contaminate, and hard to repeat.
Conceptual approaches include: searching while physically in those areas; using a location-spoofing browser setup; asking colleagues in other suburbs to search on a clean account; or using Google’s location controls where they exist. Each approach has limits. Personalisation, previous searches, and the difference between Search’s local pack and the Maps app can all change what you see. You also cannot honestly compare a phone check in January with a desktop VPN check in June.
Manual sampling is still useful for a first illustration: five points, one query, written down with date and place. It does not scale to several keywords, several locations, or monthly history.
When does geo-grid software become useful?
Geo-grid software becomes useful when you need the same query checked from many coordinates, on a repeatable schedule, with the configuration stored so next month is comparable.
Software does not create a Google ranking factor. It automates sampling and makes geographic differences easier to see. That is the point at which a specialised platform earns its keep: more points, more keywords, more dates, and less argument about whose phone was used.

What Local Falcon cannot tell you by itself
Local Falcon cannot tell you, by itself, why a ranking occurred, whether a change caused a lead, or whether you should create a new location page.
A geo-grid does not replace Google Search Console, website analytics, Google Business Profile Performance data, or revenue records. It does not prove that a review, a citation or a blog post caused a cell to turn. It does not inspect category policy, duplicate listings or conversion quality.
