Why Do Google Maps Rankings Change by Location?

Distance is one documented factor, not the only one, which is why a rank check from a single device is an incomplete picture of local visibility.

Why can two people see different Google Maps results?

Two people can see different Google Maps results because each search is evaluated from a location: the device location, a stated place in the query, or Google’s estimate of where the searcher is. The same words are not the same search if the coordinates differ.

Interface differences add noise. The local pack on Search, the Maps app, and a desktop Maps view can show overlapping but not identical lists. Personalisation and previous activity can also change what appears. What is proximity in Local SEO?

Proximity, in Local SEO usage, is the industry name for the geographic nearness between the searcher (or the location implied by the query) and the business. Google’s current Business Profile help page uses the word distance for that idea.

Proximity is not a setting you increase by drawing a larger service-area shape. Google’s representation guidelines treat oversized service areas as an accuracy and policy issue, not as a documented ranking lever. You cannot “set proximity” in Google Business Profile. You can only describe where the business actually is and where it actually serves customers.

Does the closest business always rank first?

No. The closest business does not always rank first. Distance is one of three documented factor families. Relevance (how well the profile matches the query) and prominence (how well-known the business is, including signals such as reviews and links that Google mentions in the same help article) can outweigh a small distance gap.

A specialist clinic two streets farther away can outrank a nearer generalist for a specific service query. A restaurant with a weaker category match can lose to a more precise listing even when it is closer. Treat “nearest wins” as a tendency in many Maps results, not as a rule. Why can rankings change only a few streets away?

Rankings can change a few streets away because local competition is dense and the distance differences between candidates are small. In a high-street cluster, moving the searcher 400 metres can reorder three similar businesses. The algorithm is not “broken”; the inputs changed.

Urban grids show this more often than regional ones. A dentist row, a stretch of cafés, or several HVAC contractors in the same postcode will produce more rank flips per block than a town with two plumbers.

What happens as the searcher moves farther from the business?

As the searcher moves farther from the business, that business usually becomes a weaker distance candidate relative to listings nearer the searcher. It may drop from the pack, fall down the list, or stop appearing in the results you are checking.

The fade is not a smooth circle. Roads, competitor locations, category match and prominence all distort the pattern. A clinic can remain visible along a corridor where few competitors sit, and disappear quickly toward a suburb that already has strong listings. That is why a radius on a map is a sampling frame, not Google’s coverage guarantee.

Why does this make traditional rank checking unreliable?

Traditional rank checking is unreliable for Maps because it usually records one location: the rank tracker’s default city, the office IP, or the owner’s phone. That one sample is then treated as “the ranking”.

Desktop “incognito in the city name” still has a location. VPN endpoints are not customers. Ranking tools that report a single average without showing the points they used hide the same problem. How can geographic visibility be visualised?

Geographic visibility can be visualised by plotting the ranking position at each sampled coordinate. A geo-grid is the usual form: centre, radius, grid size, query, and a number (or “not found”) in every cell.

Colour can help scanning. It must not be the only information. The diagram below labels ranks in numerals. Colours are this page’s convention, not a universal heat-map standard and not a recreation of any product’s interface.

If the owner only searches from location A, the report says “we rank first”. Customers at D and E never saw that. The table is a teaching device. Real markets will not follow these distances exactly.

How should businesses respond to geographic ranking differences?

Businesses should respond by deciding which geography matters, measuring that geography, and then investigating weak areas instead of chasing a single city-wide number.

  • Define the catchment you can actually serve.
  • Choose grid size and radius that match that catchment — see grid size and radius.
  • Compare the same query over time with the same settings.
  • Inspect competitors who occupy the weak cells rather than copying their names or categories.
  • Improve relevance and prominence where Google documents them (complete, accurate profile information; categories that describe the business; reviews as a prominence-related signal) without attributing every cell change to one tactic.

Do not open a fake address to manufacture distance. Google’s guidelines prohibit virtual offices that are not staffed during hours. Distance advantage from a false pin is a policy risk, not a strategy.
