Where does the opening date come from?
It comes from the Opening date field on the Business Profile. Owners enter it; Google uses it for pre-opening visibility and the recently opened label.
Google currently says only the year and month are required. Launch planning that uses this field is covered in new business Local SEO launch. This page is about a wrong date or a misleading recently opened status. Source: Add a business opening date.
Can an established business add its original opening date?
Yes. Google currently says businesses that are already open can add the date they opened.
Use the month and year the location first served customers, not the date you claimed the listing, and not the parent company’s founding year if this is a new branch. Source: Add a business opening date.
Can a future business set an opening date?
Yes. Google currently lets you enter a date up to one year in the future.
Set the date before you need the public pre-opening window. Google currently also says users cannot suggest edits or post reviews or photos until the business is officially open, which is a content restriction during pre-opening — not a ranking promise. Source: Add a business opening date.
When can a pre-opening profile become visible?
After you enter the date and verify the business, Google currently says the profile shows up on Google 90 days prior to the opening date.
Visibility in that window is not the same as ranking for competitive local queries. You can use posts, photos and a description during that period, according to the same help article. Source: Add a business opening date.
What does “Recently opened” mean?
Google currently says that once the business opens, the profile will show a “Recently opened” tag on Google for 90 days.
If that tag appears on a business that has been open for years, the stored opening date is the first thing to inspect. This is not the same as wrong opening hours, which is covered in wrong Business Profile hours. Source: Add a business opening date.
Why is our profile showing us as newly opened when we're not?
Common evidence-based causes are an incorrect opening date, a recently created profile whose date matches listing creation rather than the real opening, or another data issue still waiting on an edit review.
Do not speculate about unpublished ranking bonuses for the tag. Check the field, pending edits, and whether someone entered this month because they were setting up Maps for the first time.
How can the date be edited?
Google currently documents Edit profile, then Opening date, then Save.
Enter the real month and year. For a delay, move a future date rather than leaving an opening that has already passed. Source: Add a business opening date.
Could the edit remain pending?
Yes. Opening-date changes are profile edits and can sit in review like other Business Profile edits.
Google’s address help currently notes that some changes can take up to 30 days. Pending and rejected edits are diagnosed in why Business Profile edits are not approved. Change monitoring is in Business Profile change monitoring.
What if we're delaying the opening?
Update the future opening date so the 90-day public window still matches reality. Do not leave a date that implies you are already open.
If you will not serve customers for a stretch after a false start, hours and temporary closure tools may also apply — those are operational status, not the opening-date field.
Should we create another profile?
No. Correct the date on the existing eligible profile.
A second listing for the same opening is how duplicates start. Keep one profile through launch, delay and correction.

| What Google shows | Documented window | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Not public yet, future date set | Shows from 90 days before opening after verification | Verification status and stored date |
| Recently opened tag | 90 days after opening | Whether the stored date is the real opening |
| Tag on a long-running business | Same 90-day tag if the date is recent | Edit the original opening month and year |
| Wrong hours or closed label | Hours tools, not opening date | Hours and closure articles |
What not to assume
Do not assume recently opened is a ranking boost Google will document as a factor. Do not assume the tag lasts until you turn it off. Do not assume listing-creation date must equal opening date. Do not assume a pending date edit failed because of spam.
What not to do
Practical action plan
- Read the public label and the owner-editor opening date.
- Write the real month and year customers could first use the location.
- Save the edit and watch for pending review.
- Align website launch copy with the same date.
- If hours or closed status are also wrong, fix those tools separately.
When professional help makes sense
Help is useful when a chain’s opening dates were bulk-uploaded incorrectly, or when edits will not leave pending. It cannot make Google display recently opened on demand.
