What is the seven-day restriction?
It is a documented waiting period after you become a Business Profile owner or manager, before some administrative features are available.
Google currently says that when you become a profile owner or manager, you have to wait 7 days before you can manage some profile features. During that time you get an error if you try the restricted actions. This is current as of the last review of Google’s owners-and-managers help. Which actions are restricted?
Google currently lists these errors during the first seven days:
- Delete or undelete a profile
- Remove other owners or managers
- Transfer primary ownership — including making yourself or someone else the primary owner
Transfer help also says that if the new owner or manager leaves the business within the first 7 days, they are removed from the profile and must be added again. If an existing owner tries to make someone else the primary owner during that person’s first 7 days, they also get an error. Source: Transfer primary ownership of a Business Profile.
Can a new owner still edit business information?
Usually yes, within the limits of the role. The seven-day list is about delete, user-removal and primary ownership — not a freeze on every field.
Google currently says additional owners and managers can help with daily operations: edit info, respond to reviews and manage posts. Managers cannot add or remove users or remove the profile. Only owners can add or remove users. Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership. A new manager who waits seven days still cannot remove the old agency; that action needs an owner. Why can’t I remove the previous agency immediately?
Because a newly added owner or manager is in the documented seven-day window, or because your role cannot remove users at all.
If you were added yesterday, wait. If you are only a manager, ask an owner — preferably the primary owner — to raise your role or to remove the agency after your wait ends. Do not delete the agency’s Google Account as a shortcut; Google says that if you delete your account within the first 7 days, you are removed from the profile and must be added again.
Why can’t I make myself primary owner?
Either you are still inside the seven-day window, you are not yet an owner, or the current primary owner has not completed the transfer.
Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership, and only to an existing owner or manager. The recipient must be outside the first-seven-days restriction. There is no documented bypass.
Should agency handovers account for this waiting period?
Yes. Add the company-controlled owner early, wait out the restriction, transfer primary ownership, then remove the previous users.
A handover that starts by removing the agency’s login strands the listing. The full operational checklist — website, Search Console, analytics and the profile — is how to change Local SEO agencies without losing access. Preventative ownership is whether an agency should own your Business Profile, Analytics and Search Console.
What if the current primary owner is leaving tomorrow?
Plan earlier where possible. Add the replacement owner now and keep the current primary owner available through the seven-day window.
If they leave before the transfer, you may still have owner access without the ability to become primary owner until the wait ends — and without them, the transfer button may have nobody authorised to press it. Do not wait until their last afternoon to send the invite.
What if ownership was transferred during a business sale?
The same seven-day rules apply to the buyer’s newly added Google Account.
The sale handover should add the buyer as owner before completion, keep the seller available to transfer primary ownership after the wait, and only then remove seller users. That sequence is what to do with Google Business Profile when a business is sold.
What if nobody can access the current owner account?
That is lost access, not the seven-day restriction. Use Google’s ownership request process.
If you cannot open People and access because you have no login, the wait has not started. See what to do if you lost access to a Google Business Profile.

Eligible admin actions Role limits still apply. Managers still cannot add or remove users. Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership.- Company-controlled Google Account added as owner before old access is removed.
- Calendar reminder at day 7 for user-removal and primary-owner transfer.
- Primary owner completes the transfer; managers are not asked to do it.
- Former agency or employee removed only after the wait and the transfer.
- Website, Search Console and analytics ownership checked in the same window.
What not to assume
- That the error means Google locked you out of the listing.
- That a manager can remove owners after seven days.
- That deleting your Google Account resets the clock in a useful way.
- That this page replaces a full agency or sale handover.
What not to do
- Do not remove the only remaining owner before the new owner can take primary ownership.
- Do not create a second profile to “start clean.”
- Do not share passwords to skip People and access.
- Do not treat the wait as a verification or suspension problem.
Practical options
- Confirm the date you were added and your current role.
- If you need to remove users or transfer primary ownership, wait until day 8 unless an existing unrestricted owner can do it now.
- If you have no access, switch to the lost-access process.
- If an agency or sale is in progress, sequence invites before contract end dates.
When professional help makes sense
Help is useful when a sale, agency exit and departing director land in the same week. Nobody can skip Google’s documented seven-day wait.
